What are ventilated decking systems?

Ventilated decking is a technology that has been known for many years and offers a number of advantages. Above all, it allows for the creation of a level usable surface, even when installed on a slope with a significant gradient (up to 15%), ensuring ensuring optimal water drainage from the terrace whilst maintaining user comfort. This is possible thanks to the use of terrace supports, which raise the final floor to the correct height, ensuring that the top surface is perfectly level.

Below is a diagram of a ventilated terrace (in this case using slabs, although on a ventilated terrace you can also lay joists with decking)

What are the advantages of ventilated terraces?

Ventilated terraces have a significant advantage over traditional terraces, and this is particularly evident after years of use, when ventilated terraces retain their aesthetic appearance, whilst tiles on glued terraces crack and fall off. This is the result of even a small amount of water getting into the joints (grout), which, as it freezes, burrows deeper and deeper and damages the material. However, apart from this, ventilated decking has many more advantages; here we will list some of them:

Flat surface - the ability to build a terrace regardless of the ground’s gradient or slope (levelling the terrace using adjustable supports).

Rapid water drainage from the terrace surface – thanks to the gaps between the slabs, water is easily drained beneath the terrace’s usable surface

Protection of the waterproofing - thanks to the fact that there is no need to use adhesive, the waterproofing is protected from damage

Lightweight construction – the adjustable supports are lightweight (raised terraces do not require large amounts of heavy plaster, as is the case traditional terraces; this is a lightweight structure, which helps to reduce investment costs).

Ventilation, i.e. reduction of moisture under the terrace (the system provides better thermal insulation; the air gap between the terrace surface and the base ensures constant air circulation, making the waterproofing layers more effective and durable, whilst the waterproofing is not exposed to external weather conditions and UV radiation).

Simple and quick installation (can be carried out by yourself). Thanks to the use of brackets, working time is reduced, as there is no need to wait for the material to dry. Workers are able to complete the job much faster than with traditional terraces, which results in shorter working times.

Hiding installations under the surface—thanks to raising the terrace, it is possible to conceal all types of installations beneath the surface, in the void beneath the slabs/joists

Aesthetic finishing of the terraces—a wide range of accessories for terraces allows for an aesthetic finish to the sides of the terrace

Additional acoustic insulation

Easy inspection and repair of damaged components – slabs and supports are not permanently fixed, making it easy to replace damaged components or inspect the substrate

High load-bearing capacity— terrace brackets are capable of withstanding very heavy loads

Aesthetic finish of the terraces – a wide range of accessories for terraces allows for an aesthetic finish to the sides of the terrace

What materials should be used to build a ventilated terrace?

Ventilated terraces are well suited to using both slabs (stone, concrete, ceramic) and joists (composite, timber, aluminium) finished with decking boards. As the supports are versatile components, the usable surface can be finished with almost anything, even artificial grass laid on the grids.
