BSP KCP COUPLING SYSTEM – technical description

1. SYSTEM

The BSP KCP fixing system is a mechanical fixing system for cladding panels – most commonly stone panels – on external façades and internal walls using ventilated façade technology. This system is designed for heavier cladding with an irregular pattern of vertical joints. It consists of BSP KW1 aluminium brackets (alternatively, BSP KW1 PAS or KW4 PAS passive brackets), vertical aluminium profiles, a BSP KCP horizontal profile, and BSP KC1 and KC2 panel fixing clips. All aluminium components of the BSP KCP system are manufactured from extruded aluminium alloy EN AW 6060 T66 or EN AW 6063 T6.

2. CONSOLES

The BSP KW1 brackets are made entirely of aluminium. They are 4 mm thick, which makes them relatively strong.

The BSP KW1 PAS and KW4 PAS passive brackets, which are used as alternatives, have been designed with a view to the increasingly stringent regulations regarding the thermal insulation performance of external partitions. The specially designed shape of the brackets and the carefully selected materials from which they are manufactured allow for a relatively high load-bearing capacity whilst maintaining very favourable insulation parameters. By using BSP passive brackets, the effect of ‘thermal bridges’ in the thermal insulation layer of the external façade can be significantly reduced.

The KW1 PAS passive console consists of aluminium components and a flat thermal insulation spacer. The wall thickness of the aluminium base of the console is 3–4 mm, depending on the projection. The wall thickness of the aluminium end piece, on the other hand, is 3 mm. The thermal insulation spacer is made of epoxy-glass laminate with a thermal conductivity coefficient of λ=0.36 W/(m*K). The spacer is fixed to the aluminium components using stainless steel rivets. Thanks to the spacer’s favourable thermal insulation properties, this bracket is an excellent product for use in energy-efficient construction, as confirmed by a certificate issued by the Passive House Institute in Darmstadt. The bracket is classified as non-fire-spreading when exposed to fire from the outside. In terms of reaction to fire, it has a B-s3,d0 rating. It also holds a positive opinion from the Building Research Institute (ITB) regarding paragraph 225 of the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on the technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location, as well as for use above 25 m and in fire separation zones.

The KW4 PAS console is made up of aluminium components and a plastic chambered spacer with excellent thermal insulation properties. The spacer’s chambers are enclosed within a layer of thermal insulation wool, creating an unventilated air space, which also enhances thermal insulation. The spacer is clamped into the sockets of the aluminium components and is thus permanently connected to them. The bracket is classified as non-fire-spreading when exposed to fire from the outside. In terms of reaction to fire, it has a B-s3,d0 rating. It also has a positive opinion from the Building Research Institute (ITB) regarding paragraph 225 of the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on the technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location, as well as for use above 25 m and in fire separation zones.

The length of all brackets depends on the projection of the façade and is determined on a case-by-case basis according to the design documentation. The height, on the other hand, depends on the function of the bracket. Fixed brackets – which transfer vertical loads from the weight of the façade to the building structure – are available as standard in heights of 150 mm or 120 mm. Sliding brackets – which transfer only horizontal loads from wind suction and pressure – are available as standard in heights of 60 mm or 90 mm. The brackets feature a specially designed pocket, which significantly facilitates the fixing of profiles and the alignment of their planes. The holes in the brackets for fixing the profiles allow for their free thermal expansion. Anchoring elements selected on the basis of structural calculations are used to fix the brackets to the building structure. Special BSP HDPE system washers (alternatively EPDM or PVC) are used under the brackets to prevent corrosion at the point where the aluminium comes into contact with the substrate and to achieve better thermal insulation performance.

3. VERTICAL PROFILES

The most commonly used vertical profiles are the BSP KWR1 T-sections and the BSP KWR2 angle sections. Alternatively, other profiles from the BSP range may be used, depending on the structural calculations. BSP KWR1 aluminium profiles are T-sections used to connect KCP horizontal profiles. BSP KWR2 aluminium profiles, on the other hand, are angle profiles used as support profiles in the central section of KCP horizontal profiles. The flange thickness of the profiles is 2 mm. The 70 mm flange width ensures high rigidity of the profiles. The angle profiles have a front wall 50 mm wide. The T-sections, on the other hand, have a front flange 120 mm wide, which allows for relatively extensive horizontal adjustment at the joints of the horizontal profiles. The surface of the front walls of the profiles is grooved. The profiles are fixed to the brackets using 4.8×19 A2 self-tapping screws.

4. HORIZONTAL PROFILES

BSP KCP horizontal profiles are rectangular, closed-section profiles with a wall thickness of 3 mm, characterised by relatively high strength. The profiles feature special sockets for fixing gaskets and rail guides for fixing clips, which facilitates their straight-line positioning. Thanks to the ability to position the hangers anywhere along the horizontal line, the BSP KCP system is ideal for fixing panels in a layout with continuous horizontal joints and irregular vertical joints, arranged in a staggered pattern. The profile guides also provide additional protection against the brackets being pulled out. Horizontal profiles are usually fixed to vertical profiles using screws, selected on the basis of structural calculations.

5. HOOKS

BSP KC1 clips are single end clips used to fix panels at the bottom and top edges of the façade. BSP KC2 clips, on the other hand, are double intermediate clips used to fix panels in the middle section of the façade. The clips feature a special groove designed to fit the BSP KCP profile guides. They also have sockets for securing the gaskets that seal the panels. The standard width of the clips is 34 mm. As the clips are visible, they can be powder-coated in any colour. The clips are fixed to the profiles using self-tapping stainless steel screws with a diameter of at least 5.5 mm or stainless steel bolts with a diameter of at least M6. The exact type of fastener must be selected on the basis of structural calculations.

6. GENERAL

All components of the BSP aluminium substructure are classified as durability class B in accordance with PN-EN 1999-1-1:2011 and may be used without protective coatings in environments with atmospheric corrosion categories C1, C2 and C3 in accordance with PN-EN ISO 12944-2:2001. Following an additional protective treatment – anodising – they may also be used in environments with atmospheric corrosion categories C4. BSP aluminium substructure components are classified, without testing, in fire reaction class A1 in accordance with standard PN-EN 13501-1+A1:2010 on the basis of European Commission Decisions No 96/603/EC, 2000/605/EC and 2003/424/EC.

The BSP KCP system should be installed in accordance with a detailed design drawn up by designers with appropriate expertise in the field of structural engineering and construction. The layout of the substructure and the spacing of the components (the strength of the entire system) should be verified by structural calculations prepared by a structural engineer with relevant qualifications in the field of structural engineering and construction.

Panel types available for this system:

  • Architectural concrete
  • Porcelain stoneware
  • Stone
